WFSS Acts as WASH Responder for Sudan Crisis
UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) approached WFSS to act as the WASH responder to support the development of the Wedwiel Refugee Camp for Sudanese refugees. WFSS immediately jumped into action and completed a newly drilled well in less than two days. The new well, along with a solar pump, will become an integral piece of a water storage & distribution system at the camp. Learn more.
2022-23 Season Update
WFSS just kicked off the regular operating season in December to implement clean water projects: 32 newly drilled wells, 50 well rehabilitations, 2 water storage and distribution systems, and hygiene education trainings in each community served. But did you know that teams have been working in the field since November implementing projects with established partners like UNICEF and Norwegian Church Aid? Field teams are also gearing up for another project with partner The Carter Center, drilling new wells, and rehabilitating broken wells to continue the successful fight to eradicate guinea worm disease by ensuring access to clean water. Water Storage & Distribution System and School Latrine
WFSS Special Project: constructed a water tower with underground piping and three central water distribution kiosks (faucets)—and built a latrine (toilet facility) at Pian-tok Primary School. This project benefits 2,000 community members in the Eastern Bank area of Wau, Western Bhar El Ghazal State. The main water distribution points are Pian-tok Primary School, the Eastern Bank community, and the market. These projects allow easy access to clean water, improve hygiene and sanitation, and create more sustainable habits. Before the installation of the restroom, students walked miles to the bush to relieve themselves, missing lessons and often going home. Girls are significantly affected as they now have a place to practice proper hygiene and sanitation instead of skipping school due to their menstrual cycle. The new toilet facility serves 228 girls, 293 boys, and 15 teachers. Learn more
Country-Wide Water Storage and Distribution Project
Water for South Sudan is implementing the Pinydit County Water Storage Project that provides vital access to clean water to more than 10,000 residents in South Sudan. Apart from constructing new solar-powered water wells and raised water towers, this project funds the construction of underground piping to five water tap kiosks, two handpumps at the local school, and four hygiene training sessions. Locals have responded that this project has provided hope to their community, allowing them to focus on other activities to better improve their lives. More Information
