Haiti Hurricane Mathew Relief

HelpAge is responding to the Haiti emergency with a number of activities to support older people affected by the hurricane, as well as advocacy and awareness raising among key stakeholders on the inclusion of older people in their responses.

Direct support for older people includes physical rehabilitation and mobility aids for those older people injured during the hurricane in addition to psycho-social support for the displaced older people who are living in communal shelters and coping with trauma. Direct support will also include food and non-food items for older people who are most in need. These services and support will be provided in collaboration with Handicap International. In terms of advocacy and awareness raising, we will provide technical support on how to include older people in emergency response activities through Handicap and the Haitian Society for the Blind (a partner we worked closely with during the 2010 earthquake), as well as with 6 Older People’s Associations.
